Another Eastern Illinois University institution bites the dust! My buddy Jim Schnorf’s family once owned both Mother’s (just before the name change) and the nearby Rendezvous, we used to go to those bars back in the early 1970’s. The fire reminds me of the night Sporty’s burned January 18, 1972. I had been there earlier that night and we were in a poker game in our rooms above the Ko-Op Restaurant when we heard sirens around 3 AM. We walked out and smoke was in the air, it was starting to snow and we hiked up to watch the firemen battle the blaze...
A 29-year-old Charleston man has been charged in connection with the fire that destroyed the building at 506 Monroe Ave. that housed Mother's Bar.
